The 11 years I spent as a photojournalist or editor of photography reflect the typical work that a struggling photographer goes through in what was a highly competitive world of
news and magazine photography in 1980s-Washington DC.
The slide shows below are photos that are examples of some of the work I did.
My mentor, Homer Page - an internationally recognized photographer in the 1940s through 60s - helped me understand how to make photos with emotion. He schooled me with projects and lessons. He guided me by being a demanding critic. And, he wrapped arms around me that gave me encouragement despite my limitations. Mostly, Page taught me that a lot of work has been done in photography since it was invented in the 1840s and it did no good for a modern photographer to just repeat what other masters have already achieved. For Page, it was personal vision that counted. You worked with everything you had to realize it.
I'm not sure I ever found that vision, but that was the standard - a tall one.

THE VIETNAM MEMORIAL opened in 1982. I did a photo essay to try to capture the spirit of the men and women who came that day to pay their respects to the 50,000+ who died in an unpopular war. The attitude the Amercian people had toward the war even then was shown in the relatively sparse crowd. But, those who attended were passionate. The bugler's taps was a memorable moment. Sadly, Gamma Liaison could never tell me if these were ever published.

I TRAVELED TO BERLIN in 1988 as part of of German-sponsored press junket that one of my photographer friends put together for journalists who would write positive stories about Germany. I don't think my photographs were necessarily positive about Germany, especially when I ran into an anti-International Monetary Fund protest in the streets led by European anarchists. And, the experience of seeing boys with guns at a war memorial in East Berlin was heavy on the eyers.

I WAS ALWAYS ON THE LOOKOUT for interesting stories where the photographs could be used as stock pictures by anyone looking for generic photos of topics. Photographers sold the rights back then to anyone using the photographs...today it's a bit different because it is generally hard to hold onto rights these days. But, then, some iconic photos could sell well.
