The Twin Cities Dance Crew
I got a chance to see a Minnesota original... The Twin Cities Dance Crew.
This troupe performed at a gala fundraising drive to benefit the One Love project that provides helpful personal items and funds for services to young people in Jamaica. The Dance Crew is made up of some remarkable young people. These kids have built for themselves something that they truly love and they pour their heart and soul into it with incredible exuberance. Dance is not something I think I completely understand, nor is it anything I have ever done well, but anyone can appreciate these kids. I guess they might be classified as breakdancers, but it seems they go way beyond that. They sway and jump, gyrate and slow step across the floor with vitality, energy, and smoothness that looks to be a lot easier to do than it really is. There is a coordinated rhythm with each member's cameo spotlight piece and every crew member is involved in every move.
A lot of old people jab at young kids today thinking they are not into the right things or clearly into the wrong things. But, this crew is tight and and dynamic examples of constructive artistry. They've got passion, verve and style... I photographed them in a way to show the excitement their moves create in the audience...nothing static about these kids - you can't flash-freeze their dance and tell their true story.
