The Canterville Ghost

The Canterville Ghost, a play based on Oscar Wilde's first published story in 1887, had audiences in fits of laughter and at the edge of their seats. Set in an English countryside manor recently sold by an anxious Lord who has tried unsuccessfully for years to unload the "troubled house", the plot unfolds about an American family who buys the property but does not realize that someone else is already living there.
Theatre in the Round is known for the intimacy of its "arena" stage, and it has produced some very lively plays over the years, but none better than this story. An ensemble of actors support the leading character, the Ghost Himself (played in a memorable performance by Mark Mattison), and they are true-to-form players who bring wonderful characters into this arena. There is never a dull moment and plenty of lines for chuckles and belly laughs in a play that grabs you in every scene and gives you a slight twist at the end.
Lynn Musgrave directed the production and is known for her expert attention to detail that gets the best out of every performer. But, in this case, she is also being highly praised for the sound background she produced that gives the entire performance and sense of life and continuity.
